The First HOLLER Strip That Isn’t On This Website

So, I hope you know that I have a “Holler” strip in the latest music themed issue of “The Believer.” It’s called “The Nirvana Shirt” and it was actually the first “Holler” strip I ever did. I didn’t post it on this site since it was going to be in the magazine.

The comics editor Kristen Radtke was amazing and I can’t thank her enough for helping me polish the strip. A lot of my experience with editors in the past has left a lot to be desired but this was miles away from that experience.

I’m really happy with the strip and very excited to be included in this issue… Friggin DAVID BYRNE interviews himself in this same issue. That’s a trip for me (“Fear of Music” is one of my favorite albums)

The best part is being in print again and I hope that the rest of “Holler” will see the printed page soon. But anyway, get your butts over to their website and read the strip or order a few copies of the latest issue!

ON FORMAT

The strip posted today is called “GETTING IN TUNE.” It’s a one page gag cartoon. So, pretty much I’m going to do whatever the Hell I feel like doing with this comic. There will be longer stories like the introduction I finished last Wednesday and to sort of fill in holes and to do character bits I’m going to be doing little one pagers and shorter pieces.

I grew up loving indie books in the ’90s. Things like “HATE” or “Yummy Fur”… They always were sort of like one man anthology type books. The idea with “Holler” is to sort of get that feel with just one main cast. Kind of like a grunge Archie comic. This will allow me to play with format and style a bit. Change things up formally.

So today’s strip and the one that will be posted next called, “The Booger” will be one pagers and a longer story will continue after. I plan on spending a lot of time on this strip and let it sort of evolve organically. So please keep on reading. Update on Wednesday…. THE BOOGER!!!

A Little Help From My Friends

Me at age 16ish and the guy that would end up being the best man at my wedding.
The actual Magnesium Mama… I’m somewhere to the left probably acting like an idiot. Check out the vintage HEROES CON shirt.
Mellon Collie and the space lasers of hillbilly yearbook photos… or something.

About a year ago I sent out a message on FACEBOOK to a group of my friends talking about how I was going to do a book about our high school years.

I put out a call for photos and told them to tell stories, whatever. They all came through with flying colors. Special shout out to Caleb Lewis and Jodi Grutz. They kept tons of photos from back then. They have been invaluable to me as far as reference. Clothing especially hair and stuff is all coming from these photos they kept.

I also reached out to a few people telling them I may swipe a few things for a few characters. Everyone was very nice and seemed cool with it… I’m glad because I felt awkward. I really love making this and hope the people that helped will read it one day and get a kick out of it.

The name of the band in this comic is MAGNESIUM MAMA… That was a real band made up of real people that played really funny and embarrassing songs… Perfect fodder for a funny book. So I just wanted to thank all those people in public. When I draw I have those photos and my old yearbooks out for reference on those redneck mullets.

Anyhoo. Thanks and see you Sunday for a new page.

Jeremy Massie is making another comic

The past few years my comics have been published and distributed in comic and book stores all over the place. For the first time in a while I have no publisher for my current project.

So, I figured while I’m working on my new comic I’ll serialize it here and everything will sort itself out one way or another. Whether I self publish it or someone picks it up, it will be out there in the world and I’ll be working on it.

My new comic is called HOLLER. It’s about a group of teenagers in a punk band in the Appalachian Mountains. The story is set in the 1990s and draws from my own experiences growing up in Virginia back then. The comic is going to be told in a series of short stories that when completed will chronicle the senior year of all the main characters.

I’ll be updating this thing Wednesdays and Sundays.
